Our Purpose

Two Missions, One Purpose

Healing Hands funds volunteer surgical missions abroad and mobile foot-care clinics locally — treating Hansen’s Disease, congenital foot deformities, and diabetic neuropathy. Every dollar raised goes directly to restoring mobility and dignity for those who need it most.

🌍

Across the World

In rural India, thousands of children and adults live with treatable foot and limb deformities that limit their ability to walk, work, and attend school. Healing Hands sends volunteer surgical teams to remote hospitals in places like Kolkata, Tirupati, and smaller rural towns in Andhra Pradesh -- including BIRRD Hospital -- performing life-changing procedures at no cost to patients. From treating Hansen's Disease (Leprosy) and congenital foot deformities like clubfoot and vertical talus, to addressing diabetic neuropathy, each mission restores mobility and prevents long-term disability for people who would otherwise never access specialized foot and ankle care.

  • Children with congenital foot deformities like clubfoot and vertical talus gaining the ability to walk
  • Leprosy survivors reclaiming independence and dignity through reconstructive surgery
  • Patients with diabetic neuropathy receiving specialized limb-salvage care
🏙️

Across the City

On the streets of Seattle, foot injuries are one of the most common and least treated health problems among people experiencing homelessness. Wet shoes, untreated wounds, and miles walked each day without rest create painful, sometimes dangerous conditions. Healing Hands organizes mobile foot-care clinics that meet people where they are, providing wound care, clean socks, properly fitted shoes, and compassionate human contact. It is healthcare delivered with dignity, one neighbor at a time.

  • Warm shoes and dry socks for those without shelter
  • Ambulatory foot-care reaching people where they are
  • Palliative wound care restoring comfort and hope

Chitravina (21-String Veena)

A child prodigy turned global ambassador for Indian classical music, Chitravina N Ravikiran is a master of the 21-string chitravina and one of the most decorated musicians in Carnatic tradition. Beyond performance, he is the founder of Musopathy — a pioneering discipline of Medical Music that bridges sound science, rhythm, and clinical research for health and wellness. His work through Clisonics and the Musopathy Foundation is advancing tonation-based techniques as complementary interventions for post-operative recovery, respiratory rehabilitation, and neurological wellness.

About Dr. Lalita Turaga

The physician and mission leader behind Souls for Soles.

Medical Director · Healing Hands

Dr. Lalita Turaga, DPM

Board-Certified Podiatric Foot & Ankle Surgeon

Dr. Lalita Turaga is a board-certified podiatrist and the Medical Director of Healing Hands. Fellowship-trained in diabetic limb salvage and reconstructive surgery at Emory University, she currently practices at Evergreen Health and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health. Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Turaga has led multiple surgical mission trips to India — performing reconstructive surgeries for patients with Hansen’s Disease, congenital foot deformities, and diabetic neuropathy in underserved communities across Kolkata, Tirupati, and rural Andhra Pradesh.

It is this dual commitment — healing locally and globally — that inspired the Souls for Soles benefit concert.

Sound That Heals

Where music meets medicine — tonation-based techniques for post-operative recovery

Musopathy is a pioneering discipline of Medical Music founded by Chitravina N Ravikiran. Unlike traditional music therapy, Musopathy isolates precise acoustic parameters — frequency, rhythm, resonance — and applies them as measurable, repeatable clinical interventions. Its techniques require no musical training and can be practiced anywhere, at any time.

Tonation Breathing Techniques (TBT)

Self-generated sustained vocal tones — humming through nasal, pursed lips, or geometric patterns — combined with controlled diaphragmatic exhalation. Vocal cord vibration stimulates the vagus nerve, shifting the autonomic nervous system toward parasympathetic dominance: reducing cortisol, enhancing heart rate variability, and increasing nitric oxide production for improved oxygenation.

MANET (Aural Neural Engagement)

Structured rhythm-and-mathematics exercises drawn from Indian Tala systems, Western, and African rhythmic traditions. Participants track and manipulate rhythmic-mathematical patterns to engage the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum — sharpening focus, working memory, and cognitive resilience without requiring any musical knowledge.

Receptive Musopathy (Clinical Listening)

Passive listening to specially composed minimal pieces — as few as 4 to 5 notes — drawn from over 7.2 million mathematically organized scales. Designed to deliver precise frequencies that patients cannot self-generate, this modality targets neural habituation and is being developed into 'Musopathy Capsules' — precise sonic dosages for specific conditions.

Tonation in Post-Operative Recovery

For patients recovering from foot and ankle surgery — the very patients treated on Healing Hands' surgical missions — Musopathy's Tonation Breathing Techniques offer a non-pharmacological complement to standard post-operative care. Controlled nasal tonation activates the vagus nerve, helping manage surgical pain without additional medication, reducing post-operative anxiety, and accelerating respiratory recovery. In clinical observations, TBT has shown measurable improvements in oxygen saturation within 15 minutes and significant gains in heart rate variability — a key marker of recovery readiness.

  • Non-pharmacological pain management through vagal nerve stimulation
  • Reduced post-operative anxiety and cortisol levels
  • Improved oxygen saturation and respiratory function
  • Enhanced heart rate variability — a marker of autonomic recovery
  • Accessible to all patients regardless of age, language, or musical ability

Research-Backed

IIT Mandi controlled study (n=53): 11% RMSSD increase, 20% RSA improvement (p=0.009)

Charusat University trial: statistically significant systolic blood pressure reduction in 15 days

300+ COVID patients: measurable respiratory improvement within 15 minutes of first TBT session

Acute stress study (n=55+): 30%+ increase in positive affect, Cohen's d ≈ 1.3–1.5

Musopathy and TBT are complementary wellness practices, not substitutes for clinical care. They do not claim to cure illness. Patients should never discontinue prescribed medications without physician consultation.
